Author Guidelines

The Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society is a fully open access journal. Therefore, it is free for readers. There is no article submission or processing fee. However, if a manuscript is accepted, the authors are expected to pay a publication fee of $70 or N100,000.  

HOW TO SUBMIT A MANUSCRIPT

The manuscript should be submitted online on the journal website at:

We accept a manuscript on the understanding that it is reporting unpublished work and that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. We generally accept manuscripts in the following categories: reports of original research, case reports, special articles, letters to the editor, reviews and 'How-I-Do-It'.

PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS 

Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society follows the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals (ICMJE Recommendations), details of which can be accessed at: http://www.icmje.org

LENGTH  OF MANUSCRIPTS

Full-length articles should not exceed 3,000 words and have a maximum of six tables (or figures). Short reports should be less than 1,500 words with a maximum of two tables (or figures). Letters to the Editor and Book reviews should be less than 1,500 words and do not need an abstract.

FORMATTING

Manuscripts should be written in English and typed to fit on single-sided A4size pages, with margins of at least 25mm. Research articles should include the following, each beginning on a fresh page: title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, references, acknowledgements. All illustrations, figures, and tables should be placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.

TITLE PAGE

This should contain an informative title, the first name, initial and last name of each author. The page should also include the name of institution(s) and departments to which the work should be attributed, and the name, address, email, and telephone numbers (s) of the author responsible for correspondence about the manuscript. We also require the email addresses of ALL authors. On acceptance, the list of authors will not change.

ABSTRACT

The abstract must not exceed 250 words and must be structured as follows: Background, Objectives, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.

This should be on a separate page and not be more than ten printed lines (about 500 bytes).

FIGURES AND TABLES AND SCIENTIFIC MEASUREMENTS.
    1. Figures and tables should be of reproducible quality, include comprehensive captions and not duplicate material presented in the text. All illustrations (tables and figures) must be cited consecutively in the text. Avoid internal vertical or horizontal lines in tables.
  • All figures should be professionally designed and submitted as original copies. • All scientific measurements except blood pressure (mm Hg) should be expressed in SI units. 

REFERENCES: (Vancouver style).

  1. The references must be in the following form: author (s), title of journal article, full name or Index Medicus or Medline or PUBMED abbreviation of journal, year of publication, volume number, and page numbers in full. When there are six or fewer authors, list all of them. If there are seven or more, then list the first six followed by et al. Examples of references:

Permission to reproduce borrowed material: Written permission to reproduce borrowed material (Illustrations, tables and figures) must be obtained from the original publishers and authors, and submitted with the manuscript. Borrowed material should be acknowledged in captions  Conflict of interest disclosure Authors: The Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society requires all authors to disclose conflict of interest.

According to the ICMJE (http://www.icmje.org/ethical_4conflicts.html), this includes “all financial and personal relationships that might bias their work”. The authors have to say “whether potential conflict does or does not exist.” Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society expects authors to declare presence or absence of conflict of interest in the manuscript. This must be written on a separate page, giving detail where applicable, of the conflict of interest if it exists.

Submission Preparation Checklist

Before submitting your manuscript, please make sure you have the following:
1. Covering (submission) letter
2. Corresponding author’s name, complete address, institution, title, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail.
3. Complete address, degrees, institution, title, telephone number, and e-mail for each author
4. Manuscript in Microsoft Word.
5. Conflict of interest disclosure
6. Proposed list of potential reviewers (three reviewers).

In consideration of publication of our article, I have the permission of my co-authors to state as follows:

1. I assign to Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society with full title guarantee all rights of copyright and related rights of our article. So that there is no doubt, this assignment includes the assignment of the rights (a) to publish, reproduce, distribute, display and store the article worldwide in any forms, format and media now known or as developed in future, including print, electronic and digital forms (b) to translate the article into order languages, create adaptations, summaries or abstracts of the Article or other derivative work based on the article.

2. Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society shall prepare and publish our article in your journal. You reserve the right to make such editorial changes to make the Article suitable for publication in your Journal.

3. I hereby assert our moral rights to be identified as the authors of the Article according to the Copyright Designs and Patent act. These rights cannot be transferred.

4. I warrant that this article is our original work and it does not infringe on the intellectual property right of any other person or entity and cannot be construed as plagiarizing of any other published work. Therefore the Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society does not bear any legal responsibility for such opinions. I further warrant that the article

(i) has never been published, (ii) that it is not being considered for publication in another journal, and (iii) that it was submitted with the full knowledge and approval of the institutions listed as affiliates of the authors.

5. Without prejudice to 3 above, I warrant that the fully reference-linked version of scholarly record will only be used by the authors with due acknowledgement that it is the copyright of the Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society (JNSRS).

6. I warrant that I have the authority of my co-authors to sign this agreement on their behalf, and they have agreed to the order of the names of the contributors as in the manuscript of the article for publication.

7. This agreement (and any dispute, proceeding, claim or controversy in relation to it) is subject to Nigerian law and Jurisdiction of the Courts of Nigeria. It may only be amended by a document signed by both of us.

 

A. THE JOURNAL OF THE NIGERIAN SURGICAL RESEARCH SOCIETY OPEN ACCESS POLICY

While the Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society is freely accessible online, there may be questions on whether it is Open Access or not. We wish to state that the Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society is Open Access. There are key issues regarding Open Access needing clarification for avoidance of doubt:

  1. 1.     All papers in the Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society will be published under the CC BY (Creative Commons Attribution License) 4.0 International. See details on https://creativecomons.org/)
  2. 2.      The copyright owners or the authors grant the 3rd party (perpetually and in advance) the right to disseminate, reproduce, or use the research papers in part or in full, format/medium as long as:
  • No substantive errors are introduced in the process
  • Attribution of authorship and correct citation details are given
  • The referencing details are not changed.

Should the papers be reproduced in part, this must be clearly stated.

  1. 3.  The papers will be freely and universally accessible online in an easily readable format such as XML.

B. ABRIDGED LICENCE AGREEMENT BETWEEN AUTHORS AND The Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society

I submitted my manuscript to The Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society and would like to affirm that:

1.0  I am authorized by my co-authors to enter into these arrangements.

2.0 I guarantee, on behalf of self and co-authors:

  • That the paper is original, and has not been published in any other peer-reviewed journal; nor is it under consideration by other journal (s). It does not infringe existing copyright or any other person’s rights.
  • That we are/I am the sole author(s) of the paper and with authority to enter into this agreement. My granting rights to The Journal of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society is not in breach of any other obligation
  • That the paper contains nothing unlawful, or libelous. Nor anything that would constitute a breach of contract, confidence or commitment given to secrecy, if published
  • That I/we have taken care to ensure the integrity of the article.
